Trump Admin Makes New Cuts to US Refugee Program

The Trump administration has announced new limits on the US refugee resettlement program.

The 1980 Refugee Act mandates that the President set the annual number of refugees the US will admit at the beginning of each fiscal year.

The administration has lowered that number every year since President Trump took office. Now they've lowered the number even further, telling Congress late on Wednesday, right before the Oct. 1 deadline, that the US will allow 15,000 refugees into the US in 2021.

The limit for 2020 had been set at 18,000 refugees. But this year's program had already been frozen back in March due to fears that allowing foreigners into the country could increase the coronavirus pandemic.
