Authorities removed a suspicious package from Charlotte-Mecklenburg police headquarters Tuesday.

The suspicious package comes during a time of high racial tensions and protests following the shooting death of a black man.

"An alert employee spotted the package. There was no phone calls or threat," the police department said in a Twitter post.

According to police, the package was discovered around the same time activists entered the building to deliver demands to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney. It remains unclear if the protestors have any connection to the package.

Authorities evacuated the entire building, fearing the package could have been an explosive planted to harm police officers.

A bomb squad used a robot to remove the package, which was then taken to a remote location. Police say more testing was needed to determine exactly what the package contained.
