Newly appointed Veterans Affairs chief Sloan Gibson visited the Phoenix Health care facility at the center of the nationwide scandal Thursday.

Gibson plans to discuss what has been done to address allegations that numerous veterans have died while waiting to get an appointment.

Last week, a report by the Office of the VA Inspector General found 1,700 Phoenix-area veterans were "at risk of being lost or forgotten" after not being included on the official waiting list.

Gibson said the VA has already reached out to the 1,700 veterans mentioned and that officials have begun scheduling appointments and discussing medical needs with them.

Gibson took the top spot at the VA after Secretary Eric Shinseki resigned.
