GOP leaders have decided to delay impeaching IRS Commissioner John Koskinen.

Republicans believe the IRS illegally targeted conservative groups like the Tea Party that want tax exemptions. When they launched an investigation into these claims, Koskinen allegedly tried to disrupt the investigation, sparking a major GOP effort to impeach the commissioner.

Rep. John Fleming, R-La., spearheaded the push to impeach Koskinen.

"For years the IRS has abused its power to target people based on their political views," Fleming said in a statement. "Commissioner John Koskinen not only did nothing about it, but continued the trend of deception by deliberately keeping Congress and the American people in the dark."

However, with the recent cancellation of the impeachment vote, Koskinen will be given an opportunity to formally dispute these allegations before Congress next week.

"This hearing will give every American the opportunity to hear John Koskinen answer under oath why he misled Congress, allowed evidence pertinent to an investigation to be destroyed, and defied Congressional subpoenas and preservation orders," the Freedom Caucus said in a statement. "It will also remove any lingering excuses for those who have been hesitant to proceed with this course of action."

The hearing will commence next Wednesday.
