FINDING STRENGTH DESPITE TRAGEDY

Taya Kyle is a New York Times best-selling author, political commentator, and activist supporting military families. She is best known as the widow of Chris Kyle, a US Navy SEAL who was considered the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history. His harrowing story was portrayed in the movie, “American Sniper” in 2014.
After her husband died in 2013, Taya became actively involved in veteran support and advocacy She also became a best-selling author and has just written her first children’s book, Prayers for Bears. Within the pages, children will go on a journey, learning the importance of gratitude in all seasons of life which includes expressions of love for family and God.

When asked what inspired her to write a book for kids, she explains, “Really, it was a reflection on my kids and my story. When they were little and I would tuck them into bed, I would ask them to give me a character and a name to make a story about.”
Eleven years after Chris’s murder, while reflecting on the biggest lessons learned, Taya realized that being grateful even when times are tough stood out to her.
She explains, “After Chris’s death I remember telling a friend, ‘I don’t know if I’m going to be able to afford our house.’” Her friend responded, “Taya you have people who love you. So, you will always have a roof over your head and food to eat.”
Those words stuck with Taya and became part of her, her son Colton, and daughter Mckenna's nightly prayers which are mirrored in Prayers for Bears:

Bailey smiled a smile as big as the redwood forest and closed those little bear eyes, folded those little bear paws, and bowed that little bear head.
Bailey prayed:
“God, thank you for this bed where I rest my head.
Thank you for my house and my food to eat.
Thank you for my little bear paws
and my little bear feet.

EMPOWERING MILITARY FAMILIES

Taya’s been working to help strengthen the marriages of military families. Taya explains, “When we were in the military the SEALS had a 97 percent divorce rate.” Chris and Taya had resolved to do something to change those statistics together. Yet, Chris’s life was cut short unexpectedly in February 2013, when he and his friend Chad Littlefield were both killed by Eddie Ray Routh, a Marine suffering from PTSD. Before Chris' untimely passing, he was developing his vision to help more than the two original families he was working with. After his death, Taya decided to follow through and founded the Chris Kyle Frog Foundation, now called Taya and Chris Kyle Family (TACK-F). The mission is to honor God, country, and the families who serve by strengthening their marriages.
