GROWING UP

Dru was raised in a Christian home in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her dad, Douglas Mobley, spent many evenings praying and seeking God. Her mom, Donna, would study the Word daily while the kids were in school. Douglas was a successful businessman, but God began speaking to him about starting a healing ministry. One day, he felt compelled to pray for a man who was to have major surgery. Miraculously, God healed the man. Dru shares, “After my dad got back into his car that night, the Holy Spirit’s presence surrounded him. God spoke to him and said He was calling my dad to pray for the sick, and Jesus would heal them.”

He asked the Lord to bless his business so he would not have to ask for a dime to support his healing ministry. God did bless him with buyers for his banks and lumber yards. The Tulsa World did a front page article titled Tulsa Businessman Sells Bank to Begin a Healing Ministry. Dru was exposed to the Lord her whole life. When she met her husband, Michael he was not a Christian. In fact, he came from an abusive father and dysfunctional home life.

A FAIRY TALE LIFE

After graduating from Oklahoma State University, Dru met Michael while flying to a mixed double tennis tournament in Houston. Michael was working in Tulsa at an oil company that his grandfather, Armand Hammer, patriarch of one of the richest families in the world owned. Dru and Michael talked on the plane, and she even shared the gospel with him. The next day Michael asked her to go to lunch with him and soon after to go on a business trip to Santa Fe. Dru insisted on separate rooms and Michael agreed.

Soon after they became engaged Michael finally asked Jesus to be His Savior. They were married on Jan. 12, 1985, and her life was forever changed as she married into the Armand Hammer dynasty. “Becoming a Hammer was a process. Armand – the Hammer patriarch – wanted me to learn the ropes fast! One of the first challenges was my wardrobe. With the three or four dinners and black-tie events I was expected to attend weekly, my college cowboy boots and broom skirts which were the thing in those days, were not going to cut it,” shares Dru. She became aware very quickly that her small-town Oklahoma life was a thing of the past. His family was distant from each other, and everything was formal.

Returning from their honeymoon, Dru and Michael moved straight to Los Angeles and stayed in a hotel until they bought their first home. Michael worked long hours at Occidental Petroleum which was expected of him. Meanwhile, Dru knew no one in Los Angeles and had to find her own way. At times, she was lonely as she navigated this new life, but there were also a lot of perks that came with a lot of responsibility. At several black-tie events, Dru interacted with Princess Diana. She was even able to share with her how Jesus loves her. Dru felt that she could relate to Princess Diana on some levels because she too experienced infidelities in her marriage as well as an eating disorder.

Ten months after their marriage, Dru was pregnant with their first child, Armie. Two years later, she had her second son Viktor. Dru forged a special bond with the patriarch, Armand. She would invite him and his wife over every Sunday for supper and without fail they would come unless they were out of town.

Throughout her marriage, Dru accidentally got into buying, redesigning, and selling homes which they were living in, and she did very well. The profit on their first house was $56,000. Their next house purchased for $425,000 with $200,000 worth of work into it went for over a million. Another house was purchased for $1.4 million and sold for $7.2 million. She says, “The Lord blessed my business beyond anything I could have done on my own. We moved and uprooted our family countless times and lived in tiny quarters or filthy construction sites for years. We tried to make it a fun adventure for the boys.”

FALLING APART

The first time Dru found out her husband had been unfaithful was when her children were young. She didn’t want the boys to grow up without a father and Michael seemed truly repentant, so Dru forgave him completely. Michael was her best friend; they ate dinner together every night, went on dates and seemed to have a fairy tale life.

They had been married for 25 years and rarely argued. Then one night God revealed to her in a dream that Michael was being unfaithful. She asked him if it was true that he was having an affair. Although he initially denied the accusation, he finally admitted to his deceit. He had been having multiple affairs for years and was unrepentant. Michael’s need for affirmation from other women stemmed from his severe abuse he dealt with as a child.

After the news of Michael’s infidelities came to light, Dru was in shock and decided to leave town. On the plane, she met a young woman who was dealing with demonic attacks. Despite her heartache, Dru shared with her the gospel and even asked the Holy Spirit to fill her.

During their marriage Michael took care of all the financial matters. He had her sign papers relinquishing her financial rights on their financial assets. She trusted Michael and therefore did not read the papers. When she decided to leave him due to his infidelities, his office canceled her credit cards and closed her bank accounts. She moved into the guest room of their home. Each day she would sustain herself by walking, listening to the Word, praying for guidance, and praising the Lord. “The divorce seemed inevitable even though I prayed continuously for a different outcome,” shares Dru.

To pay her legal fees, Dru sold off some of her jewelry. Her stock in Apple allowed her to eventually purchase a condo in Texas. After the divorce proceedings, she put their Beverly Hills home up for sale. “I walked out of that divorce with about a fourth of what I had made (house renovations),” shares Dru.

In 2022, Michael died from a Glioblastoma brain tumor. Years before his passing, Dru had forgiven Michael and they remained friends celebrating many birthdays and holidays together with their children. Countless times, he expressed great remorse for his infidelities and asked Dru for her forgiveness.

DREAM CENTER

For ten years, Dru blessed the women at the Dream Center by having a birthday party once a month for the women. She had twenty pizzas delivered, a big birthday cake, and gift bags with luxury items and blankets for the birthday girls. She would spend hours with the women, listening to them, and loving on these former heroin addicts, alcoholics, and prostitutes. Dru was even asked to work with victims of sex trafficking.

Interestingly, when Dru experienced financial betrayal and heartbreak during her divorce, these women were a large part of her healing. Just as these women had to forgive their perpetrators, she too had to forgive Michael. “Many women deal with loss on many levels. You can only understand the devastation of betrayal, emotionally and financially, unless you have gone through it,” reveals Dru. Today her nonprofit, Hammered Hearts, exists to help others spiritually, physically, and mentally who have also been hammered by life.
