White House Considers Training Syria's Rebel Forces
12-31-1969
The White House may increase its support for rebel forces in Syria trying to oust President Bashar al-Assad.
With Syria's bloody civil war now three years old, Obama administration officials say the president is considering a new program that would send a limited number of American troops to Jordan on a training mission.
The troops would instruct selected members of the Free Syrian Army on a number of tactics, including counterterrorism operations.
The president has not given final approval of the initiative. The administration is still having internal discussions about the risks of increasing support.
